“Work in progress”: the Vinitaly Gala returns the “Market Galleries” to the city for a night
Verona, 15rd April 2018 – An event within an event. The “Market Galleries” in Verona hosted the Vinitaly “Work in Progress” Gala Evening in 2018, thereby previewing the end of the first stage in the redevelopment project involving the two industrial archaeology sites.
The buildings and their parabolic vault – built between 1951 and 1956 in front of the Exhibition Centre – were home to a wholesale fruit and vegetable market until decommissioning in the 1990s. In 2015, Veronafiere purchased the property from Verona City Council. The conservative restoration project will continue, in full respect of monumental constraints, after the end of the 52nd edition of Vinitaly. The objective is to use the “Market Galleries” for events, cultural occasions and congresses, as the president of Veronafiere, Maurizio Danese, and the mayor of Verona, Federico Sboarina, explained during the Gala.
“The upgrading and modernization of the Exhibition Centre, the construction of new parking facilities doubling parking spaces in Viale dell’Industria, the redevelopment of entrance gates and the Market Galleries as well as the acquisition of areas adjacent to Veronafiere are just some of the projects being implemented in accordance with the business plan approved as the same time as conversion into a joint-stock company over a year ago,” said President Danese. “Investments come to almost 70 million euros for infrastructure part alone and are needed to continue generating wealth for our local area and confirm our role as international ambassadors for the image and awareness of Verona, the Veneto Region and the country as a whole.”
